Chef Gaston is built by Jonas Egeskov, a solo iOS developer in Denmark. No studio, no growth team: one person who got tired of the six o'clock question and built the planner he wanted to use.
Who makes Chef Gaston
Jonas designs, builds and ships iOS apps end to end under his company, Egeskov Engineering. Chef Gaston reached the App Store on 26 August 2026. It shipped in the same fortnight as his two other apps: Winelingo, which explains the wine on a label in plain language, and Cardzo, a scorepad for card, dice and party games.
Why it exists
Most meal planners hand you a calendar and leave. The problem was never the calendar. It was deciding, at six in the evening with nothing defrosted, and then standing in the kitchen with a recipe that assumes you have already read it twice. Chef Gaston was built to take both of those off your plate: it decides the week with you, and then it stays in the kitchen while you cook.
What the app does today
- Plans the week's dinners around your taste and household
- Writes the shopping list as the plan minus what your pantry already holds
- Fills the pantry when you check items off the list, and empties it when you cook
- Cook Mode: one step at a time, with timers
- Ask Gaston, for the questions that come up mid-recipe
The AI planning is built on Anthropic's Claude models. The 178 recipes on this siteare the app's own catalogue, the same dinners it plans and cooks from. The app is free to download; AI planning and Cook Mode are $3.99 a month after a 7-day free trial.
